Beacon Hunt at Meadow Mountain
January 25, 2026
Join the Gore Range Gravity Alliance at Meadow Mountain for a day full of FREE and HANDS-ON Avalanche Education! Whether you are a beginner, or want a chance to practice close proximity multiple burials, the Beacon Hunt is for backcountry enthusiasts of all levels, ages, and genders.
We will have instructors + experts from Vail Ski Patrol, Vail Mountain Rescue, and the Friends of the CAIC (Colorado Avalanche Information Center) who will be there to help you test your rescue skills, answer snowpack questions, give wilderness safety + preparedness tips, and more.
We will have free drinks + prizes and are working on providing free food as well.
12:00pm - Beacon/transceiver presentation by Vail Ski Patrol
12:00pm - 3:00pm - Learn from the experts, practice your skills, and hang! Enjoy free coffee from Vail Mountain Coffee, free beer, n/a beer provided by Best Day Brewing, and other n/a drinks. We're working on free food for the event, keep your fingers crossed!
We will have multiple stations set up so multiple people can practice their skills at the same time.
Stop by for an hour or stay the whole time and engage with different experts and meet other backcountry users.
3:00pm - Giveaway! All participants will be entered, must be present to win.
GEAR: Avy gear will be available for you to practice with, but feel free to bring your own.
CLOTHES: We recommend wearing similar clothes to what you would tour in based on weather, but you do not need skis to participate in the year's Beacon Hunt.
LOCATION: We are hosting the Beacon Hunt at the meadow right in front of the parking lot this year. No touring gear or snowshoes should be needed based on the current level of snow. Good boots recommended!
We LOVE dogs, but we will have balls at the event. PLEASE keep your dogs on leash to help the event run smoothly + don’t let them pee on our stuff <3
